A North London Local Authority is seeking an experienced Interim Traffic Engineer to join their Design & Construction team in a senior, principal-level capacity.
As the Council’s technical lead on traffic engineering and road safety, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering infrastructure improvements that enhance communities, promote accessibility, and align with Vision Zero and Healthy Streets principles.

A North London Local Authority is seeking an experienced Interim Traffic Engineer to join their Design & Construction team in a senior, principal-level capacity.
As the Council’s technical lead on traffic engineering and road safety, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering infrastructure improvements that enhance communities, promote accessibility, and align with Vision Zero and Healthy Streets principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the Council’s lead advisor on traffic engineering, road safety, and traffic order compliance
- Provide expert technical input into complex and high-profile infrastructure projects
- Oversee and ensure delivery of road safety audits in line with national standards and best practice
- Embed road safety principles across the full project lifecycle
- Lead on traffic regulation orders (TROs) and ensure compliance with relevant legislation
- Manage and develop a small team of engineers and technical officers
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, contractors, and external partners
- Contribute to the development of policies and procedures to support safer, more liveable neighbourhoods
Experience Required
- Extensive experience in traffic engineering and road safety within a local authority setting
- Strong track record in delivering road safety audits and traffic management schemes
- In-depth knowledge of UK legislation and guidance, including LTN 1/20, TSRGD, and Manual for Streets
- Experience managing or mentoring staff within a technical team
- Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to a range of stakeholders
- Proven ability to deliver projects that balance engineering requirements with community needs
