Our client is recruiting a post-graduate Environmental Advisor to join the utilities phase of one of the most ambitious infrastructure programmes ever delivered in the UK. The utilities work on this programme is genuinely complex and technically demanding, and it offers the kind of early-career experience that shapes what comes next. After the utilities phase, you will move on to the main works civils and rail systems.
This is a role for someone who has taken their environmental studies, sciences or geography degree into professional practice, built real experience in a consultancy or agency setting, and is now ready to work at programme scale. You will already understand what is expected of you in a professional environment. You will have developed the communication skills and stakeholder awareness to work independently and to know when to seek support.
Your day-to-day work sits at the centre of the environment function. You will support the delivery of specific environmental projects, prepare management information and reporting material, and produce presentation and dashboard content for internal and external meetings. You will play an active part in the senior management process, supporting meetings and making sure the right information is in the right hands at the right time. The work is varied, and the ability to handle several competing demands without losing quality or focus is essential.
What you need to bring
Your academic background is in environmental studies, environmental science or geography, and you will have followed that with practical experience in a consultancy or agency environment. You will have worked on complex, multi-disciplinary projects where engineering, environmental and programme demands were all in play at once and where cost and schedule were real considerations.
You will be a clear and confident communicator. That means written work that is accurate and well structured, and the confidence to engage with senior colleagues and external stakeholders in person. You will be able to take complex environmental data and present it in a way that is accessible and useful. Awareness of relevant environmental legislation, including the HS2 Act and the wider regulatory framework, is expected. Membership of a relevant professional institution, or equivalent experience, is also expected.
Useful to have
Experience gained specifically on large-scale infrastructure programmes, where the pace and complexity of the environment pushed you to develop quickly. A track record of working across multi-disciplinary teams where environmental requirements had to be considered alongside engineering and programme priorities. Confidence using data to tell a clear story for a non-specialist audience.
The role is based in Birmingham, or London
